We Often Stock Native Plants
After our occasional native plant sales were such a hit, we decided to start stocking natives for you more regularly to help beautify your yard and support our Valley birds.
- Our supplies vary and may differ from the plants pictured above.
- In summer, call ahead to check availability. We typically reduce stock due to heat.
- Check our Local Resources page for Valley nurseries that can also help you find native plants.
Why Plant Natives?
Because it's good for local wildlife AND for you! Win-win! Texas-native plants:
- Provide essential food and shelter for resident and migratory birds, butterflies, and other pollinators
- Look great
- Typically require less water and are better at withstanding the RGV's climate and native pests
Our Special Rio Grande Valley Habitats Need Your Help
- The American Forests’ Rio Grande Valley restoration project tells us that "The thornforests in the Rio Grande Valley are one of the most biodiverse landscapes in North America. They provide habitat for 1,200 plant species, 519 bird species and 300 butterfly species." However, thornforests are currently "less than 10% of their historic range."
- The Valley Land Fund notes, “It is estimated that less than five percent of the original native habitat remains" here in the Rio Grande Valley.
We can each help by planting more natives. Visit these fantastic organizations to learn more.
